A Talented Leader Is . . . Nothing?

Pastor, are you (just) a talented leader? Or a transformed leader?

Talented people are the folk we celebrate.  They have the skill sets to perform and promise success.  They compete to win awards.  They innovate to make a difference for the betterment of the world.  They are exceptional and exclude the normal average person.

Do we need to be talented to make a difference?  We all have talents, but we may not be talented enough to compete and become a celebrity.  What can we contribute even if we don’t show exceptional talent?

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13, an exceptional talent to speak fluently with angel’s tongue or serve successfully is actually . . . nothing.  Even if we don’t possess exceptional talent we can contribute more excellently if we are transformed with love.

Love is not a talent but the fruit of a transformed life. It’s a gift of being the beloved of God. It is being who we are in the heart of God.

Love is what empowers us to act with patience, perseverance, kindness, goodness, compassion, and care. Love inspires. Love transforms just by being who we are in the embodiment of love to care for the hurting, to accept those who are strange or different, and become color blind in relating with others.

What the world really needs is not more talented people leading the world but more transformed people loving the world. Unless we are transformed to love, being a talented leader is nothing in the kingdom of God.

You can preach exceptionally but without practicing love it is an empty talk. You may become a superstar but not a real servant. You can build a mega-church but the poor around are still hungry, homeless, and hurting.

What kind are you: talented leader or transformed lover?  How can you let your talent be transformed with love?
