About a 3-minute read
I am pleased to introduce “The God Story: God’s Passion, Purposes, and Promises Revealed in the Covenants.” The God Story is a “Mentoring for Mobilization” series, seven participatory presentations designed to help Jesus-followers everywhere understand God’s passion for people everywhere.
As a teenage MK (missionary kid) in the Philippines, I remember spectacular walks on the beach on clear, moonless nights. The heavens sparkled with diamond-like stars, the expansive Milky Way a backdrop. I felt drawn into creation as if something in me was made to feel the Maker of it all, to sense his purposes for all things nearly within reach, my feet firmly on the earth, my spirit reaching into the universe.
I was already a follower of Jesus and my awe would flow into worship. I longed to be in that awe-filled worship forever. I longed to be a part of God’s story—to experience the reality of his intimate, powerful, purposeful presence in his creation and in my heart. I longed for my heart to beat in rhythm with his.
The rhythm of God’s heart fills the Bible. “The God Story”—his passion, purposes, and promises—is revealed through the Biblical Covenants he has made with humanity. They form a cohesive, uniting theme from cover-to-cover.
In “The God Story” we will discuss God’s overarching work through history as it is revealed in and through the Biblical Covenants. We will discover God’s purposes and passion through the Covenants. We will apply God’s story to the motives and mission of the Body of Christ (Jesus-followers everywhere). And we will respond to “The God Story” as individuals as well as groups in the Body of Christ.
I like the idea of “Mentoring Sessions” because it suggests we are journeying and learning together. The mentor is just a little further into the journey. The mentor is one who guides fellow Jesus-followers to discover what the Bible and the Holy Spirit wants us to know that will help us participate in God’s purposes and promises.
We learn best when we discover things together and put them into action. PowerPoint presentations of the mentoring sessions will be available for small group interaction. If it’s not possible to be in a group, a video presentation of each mentoring session will be available. In each case, participation is encouraged through email to steve@pursuinggodsheart.org and through online dialogue.
